Chitchat.gg is a random text and video chat site that launched in 2023. It is built and run by Befriendswith Ltd and has been operated by the same small founding team since launch. Our motivation behind Chitchat.gg
The random chat category had a maintenance problem in 2023. The sites left standing shared four faults:
- No updates. Layouts and features had not changed in years.
- Bots in the matching pool. Scripted accounts reached real people faster than real people reached each other.
- Ads on every screen. The free tier was funded by interrupting the chat.
- No moderation to speak of. Reports went nowhere, and sometimes reporting wasn't even an option.
Chitchat.gg was built as the actively maintained alternative: shipped on a real schedule, ad-free, moderated from day one.
Our approach to user-friendly features
What shipped at launch in 2023, as concrete mechanisms:
- No sign-up for text chat. Open the site and start. An account only mattered if you wanted settings and history to follow you across devices.
- A friends system. Add the people you want to talk to again, remove them, or block them. Friend requests can be switched off in settings.
- Chat history. The last eight conversations stay retrievable after the tab closes.
- Reconnect after a dropped connection. If the other person disconnects, the chat does not end. You can wait for them or move on.
- Continuity across devices. Switching tabs or devices mid-conversation does not log you out or lose the thread.
Putting users first: our monetization
- No ads. Chitchat.gg launched ad-free and is still ad-free in 2026.
- Funded by optional subscriptions and coins. Nothing is required to get matched or to keep chatting.
- What paid unlocked at launch: gender filtering, extra history slots, and image and video sharing in chat. Extras, not access to the core product.
We're constantly evolving
Early Chitchat.gg shipped with bugs and said so, pointing people to Discord and support email rather than pretending the product was finished. That is still the posture. Changes ship continuously, and the current state of moderation is published with dated numbers in the Safety & Moderation Transparency Report.
Our future (as written in 2023)
At launch the near-term plan was a stable release plus text-based chat, with video matching described as further out. That is the original roadmap, left as written. Text and video are both live today, and text is where most Chitchat conversations happen.
